How to Run Meta Ads for the First Time on your Shopify store
New to Shopify and Meta Ads? This step-by-step guide will help you launch your first campaign and avoid the most common mistakes.
How to Run Meta Ads for the First Time on your Shopify store
If you’re launching your e-commerce brand on Shopify, chances are you’re already hearing about the importance of running ads. Meta (Facebook & Instagram mainly) Ads are still one of the most effective ways to get in front of your target audience, but starting from scratch can be overwhelming.
This guide breaks down how to run your first Meta Ads campaign for your Shopify store, even if you have no background in marketing. It covers the foundational principles, campaign setup, budget allocation, testing methods, and how to avoid wasting money early.
Why Meta Ads Work for Shopify Brands
Meta platforms are ideal for new DTC (Direct-to-Consumer) brands for a number of reasons. In fact, when you plan the launch of your brand, you should always have a set budget allocated for Meta Ads as that’s where most likely your first few sales to strangers will come from. If you don’t yet know how much it will cost you to launch your brand or are unsure about how much money you should have saved for Ads, check out this tool I put together. Meta Ads can help you with:
- Scalable reach: Billions of daily active users are on Meta Platforms, so its a quick way to put your product in front of them.
- Visual storytelling: Perfect for showcasing products through images and videos.
- Advanced targeting: Interests, behaviors, and lookalikes make finding your audience easier.
- Low entry cost: You can start testing with $5–$10/day per ad set.
Step-by-Step: Launching Your First Campaign
1. Install the Meta Pixel
Before spending a single dollar, make sure you track conversions, because without this, you will never know if your campaigns are working or not. To set up your tracking piexel, you should:
- Go to Meta Events Manager
- Create a Pixel and connect it to your Shopify store.
- Use Shopify’s built-in Meta integration or connect via Google Tag Manager.
Tip: Verify the Pixel is working using Meta Pixel Helper (Chrome Extension).
2. Define Your Goal
Meta campaigns are optimized based on objectives. This can be to generate brand awareness, traffic to your website, lead generation and sales. For first-time Shopify founders, I strongly recommend you keep it simple and focus on:
- Sales (Conversions) if your site is ready to actually sell products.
- Traffic if you’re just launching and want to test interest.

Many first time founders either over-optimize targeting, or over-generalize.
Start with:
- Age: Your ideal range (e.g. 25–45)
- Gender: Based on product use
- Location: Country or city
- Placements: Start with Advantage+ Placements (auto).
Avoid layering too many interests at the start, but at the same time, if you know you ideal customer’s internet behaviour, this can give you an extra edge on your camapign set up type. Either way, specially at the start, you need to let the Meta algorithm learn - so just give it some time after your first launch.
4. Use High-Quality Creatives
Good ads make people stop scrolling… At least for a few seconds, and sometimes, that’s all it takes. Your creative setup matters as much as your targetting, so experiment with different images, videos and hooks. But always, ALWAYS, make them high quality.
Start with:
- 1 Static Image (product focus, clean, 4K)
- 1 Lifestyle Image (on model or in context of how the product looks like in use)
- 1 Short Video (UGC style, testimonial, try-on)
You can also use text overlays that answer the following questions:
- What is this product?
- Who is it for?
- What’s the benefit?
5. Test One Variable at a Time
Structure your campaign to learn as much a you can, in the shortest period of time, and with the least amount of budget. For example:
- Campaign Target: Conversions
- Ad Set 1: Semi-narrow Ad targeting
- Ad A: Static
- Ad B: Lifestyle
- Ad C: Video
If all three Ads fail, you know you don’t have the right targetting yet. If one of them does substantially better than the others, you know your customers reasonate a lot more with a specific method of communication, and you can double down on it. Either way, let the initial camapaign run for at least 5 days before analyzing results, because short stints of data often have outliers in it. So don’t change anything mid-test.
6. Budget Wisely
It’s more than reasonable to not want to spend away all the budget you have within the first month, because if nothing works, you will run out of cash and your brand will die. So don’t take standard internet advice on what % of your total budget you should use at the start. Instead, start low, with say, $20 a day for an Ad-set. Let it run for at least 5 days and optimize, before you increase your daily budget or launch another Ad-set.
Remember: Meta needs data and time to optimize. Don’t panic if the first few days give you no sales.
7. Optimize Based on Data
Data is at the core of your success running Meta Ads, and the below metrics are the most important ones you need to keep an eye out for at all times:
- CTR (Click-Through Rate): >1.5% = strong. Less not always is bad, but you can use this as a benchmark.
- CPM (Cost per 1,000 Impressions): Varies based on the product type and location, but $5–$15 is common
- CPA (Cost per Acquisition): Your goal should be to be less than 50% of your product price from the start
- ROAS (Return on Ad Spend): Aim for 2–3x in early stages. Excellent brands often reach 4x to 5x.
Kill ads that don’t perform and double down on ads with lowest CPA or highest ROAS.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ❌ Running traffic campaigns too long without converting
- ❌ Over-segmenting your audience
- ❌ Not optimizing landing pages (slow site = high bounce)
- ❌ Using unclear product images
- ❌ Making changes too frequently
Tools That Help
- Canva: Easy way to design ads for free
- Shopify Reports: Monitor metrics like your AOV, conversion rate and more. You can build custom reports based on the data you want to see
- Meta Ads Library: Spy on competitors’ Ads. You should use this as inspiration for when you’re building your Ads.
How Long Until You See Sales?
Some see results from day 1, while others have to wait weeks. The key is consistent testing and learning. Even a “bad” campaign teaches you something if you approach it from a data-driven mindset. What Happens After First Sales?
Once you get 50+ purchases, Meta starts optimizing much better. At this point you can:
- Create Lookalike Audiences
- Test Advantage+ Shopping Campaigns
- Layer Email & SMS marketing
- Launch retargeting campaigns (abandoned cart, product views)
Final Thoughts
Running Meta Ads for the first time can feel overwhelming, but if done right, it’s the most powerful tool to scale your Shopify brand. Stay patient, run structured tests, and focus on learning over winning in the first 10 days. Success comes with iteration.
